Richard moved very quickly from spontaneous drawings, to questioning the geometry and underlying structure of nature, as he began to do in developing his understanding and appreciation of music.

Geometry interested Richard, as did its inherent rules, which he used in his preparatory drawings, which stand for themselves as intriguing pieces of work. He became drawn to fractals and the Fibonacci series: spirals, the structure of shells, expanding patterns that reach beyond the field of vision, and the boundaries of a painting, or piece of work.
